Yesterday – 19/9 2019 – marked the 5th anniversary of Nordic Legal Tech Day, and LegalWorks hosted our annual event. We had a full house of 270 people, all excited to be part of the day. Legal counsels, legal tech companies, lawyers, startups, investors, legal innovators and thought leaders all participated in the day of panel discussions and demos of tech tools.
Our main sponsor of the day was Norstedts Juridik, who demonstrated their new legal information service tool JUNO.
Kicking off the day was Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist with a bright keynote about what legal tech can learn from the fintech industry, and the challenges of introducing new technology and automation in lawfirms. This was directly followed by an insightful discussion by our legal operations panel, moderated by Anna Rzewuska (Telia), about how legal teams can get the right value out of legal tech, and how the use of technology can solve pain points of legal and the business together.
For the first time, Nordic Legal Tech Day hosted a whole extra track during the day, completely dedicated to startups in the legal tech industry. 12 innovative and pioneering companies exhibited their tools and services, demonstrated and discussed with people in the industry. The startup track of the day was ended with a pitching competition in front of a panel of investors, where HUGO – an AI based platform bringing people in need of legal services together with lawyers –finally stood as winner.
The annual Nordic General Counsel Report was presented, where a number of interesting key findings were introduced. One of the biggest booms in the legal tech area for GC’s in 2019 has been e-signing, which 57% now say has been implemented, as opposed to 31% in 2018. The report also shows that the number one organizational challenge (chosen by 66%) for GC’s in a three-year-perspective is doing more with less, which is an indication that GC’s will have a clear focus of wanting to clear the workload, and at the same time perform better. The annual Legal Innovation Prize was presented in collaboration with LegalTech.se. This year’s Legal Innovator winners were Andrea Lindblom and company InsiderLog. Congratulations to the winners!
Our last panel session of the day was held in collaboration with Fairplace* and Anna Lensmar-Friedman as the moderator. Experts within their different areas came up on stage for an hourly debate about the digital revolution of society. Aspects of e-health, big data, the financial sector and geopolitics were all waved together in discussions about how the whole infrastructure of society is being changed, and how we can create an opportunity for everyone to be digitally included, and part of this change.
Before the day ended in drinks and mingle (sponsored by Sytorus), a number of knowledge sharing sessions were presented. One of these was the From X to Next report, which is a report conducted during the first half of 2019, meant to pinpoint the wants and needs among lawyers of different generations. Erica Wernmo from LegalWorks presented this, with groundbreaking key findings of a great shift of values happening between the older generations and the younger generations of lawyers.
